Buying Second-Hand Clothes Might Mean   You’re More Stylish, Study Says

  

  Shopping for second-hand clothes can save money.   However, researchers at the University of Tasmania think it might mean you’re more stylish too.

They asked over 500 people about their clothes shopping.

They found that the more style-conscious a person was, the more likely they were to buy  second-hand clothes.

Bagging a bargain might help you look good but it can be better for the environment too.

Why Is Reusing Clothes Better for the Environment?

Wearing clothes for longer and buying second-hand can reduce the number of new clothes that are made.

In 2019, The World Bank estimated that the fashion industry is responsible for around 10% of annual global carbon emissions.

A 2017 report by the WWF stated that between 2000 and 2014, global production of    clothes doubled. Yet, people were only keeping their clothes for about half as long as they were 15 years earlier.

The charity Greenpeace says that £140 million worth of clothing is binned every year in the UK.

The charity Oxfam runs around 650 second-hand shops in the UK. They say that the carbon footprint of the new clothes bought in the UK each month is more than flying a plane around the world 900 times.

In fact, they say buying just one white cotton shirt creates the same carbon footprint as driving a car 35 miles!

Buying second-hand can help reduce pollution and reduce water use too.

The United Nations Environment Programme says that textile dyeing is the second-largest polluter of water globally. It also says that making just one pair of jeans uses around 2000 gallons of water.

So, the next time you get offered a hand-me- down,   you might think about how it’s helping the environment and how stylish you are.
